  • Reasons 1, 2 and 3 for buying a Diesel car
    22 Aug 2008

It shocks me how different countries can get sucked in by their local media. Browsing around the other day I saw an advert targetting American audiences which touted "fantastic efficiency" and "the best gas mileage around". It showed a vehicle (I forget which one) giving 35mpg on the highway.

    That, I'm afraid, is crap.

35mpg extra-urban? Are you having a LAUGH? Most petrol cars in the UK will beat that with ease, however what's really shocking is when - like I'm doing now - you switch to a Diesel car. This was my MPG after a few miles on the motorway this afternoon. Whilst it dipped to 54mpg shortly after, it's a huge leap from the 35mpg I get from my normal petrol motor (which isn't fuel efficient at all). Sure, I'm driving a 1.9 TD with 120BHP, but it's certainly a whole lot more efficient than the those "fuel efficient" cars shown in other countries.

Oh, and a quick review of the Fiat Bravo 1.9 TD 120 MultiJet. Steering doesn't seem to be attached to wheels. Ride is too firm. Doesn't do corners without huge amounts of body-roll. Other than that, it's not too bad.
